Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth guru of
the Sikhs, was sitting by a river when a devotee came to him with a gift of two
heavy gold kadaas, or bangles. Guru
Gobind Singh held one of them and admired its workmanship and beauty. The
devotee thought, ‘He is no guru. He loves material things.’ Guru Gobind Singh
tossed one of the kadaas in the air,
playfully, and caught it again. But the next time he did not catch it and let
it fall into the river. The devotee was distraught and jumped into the water to
retrieve it but was unsuccessful. He surfaced and said in a panic,
“Show me the exact place you threw it
so I can dive down and find it.”
Guru Gobind Singh took the other kadaa and threw it into the river.
“Right there,” he said.
